Reform UK, which was founded as the Brexit Party with the help of Nigel Farage, won more votes in both constituencies than Labour’s majorities, prompting concerns in the Tory ranks that the party could cost them some seats in a general election because of a split to their core vote.since 1931, with a 24,664 Conservative majority in 2019, which was overturned by Labour the largest such turnaround at a by-election since 1945.
Reform secured 1,487 votes in Mid Bedfordshire and 1,373 in Tamworth – in both instances more than Labour’s majority over the Conservatives. Polling guru Professor John Curtice said the rise of Reform could mean the Tories “may get caught in a pincer movement between some of their former Leave voters wandering off to Labour but others going off to Reform UK”.
A senior Tory added: “Reform have quietly crept up the right side of us. We need to be careful of that. It could particularly hurt us in the red wall. That’s where Reform could do best and a lot of the Tory majorities are small.”Reform Party leader Richard Tice wrote on X/Twitter: “Twice in the same night have Reform ensured Tories lost their seat with this by-election result.
