In addition, zoo staff will have to use footbaths or change their footwear upon entering all bird exhibits or buildings housing birds, and poultry will not be used as a food item for any zoo animal for a temporary period. The Toronto Zoo said it will also step up its program to keep wild birds off the site and minimize access to areas that attract geese, ducks and other avian visitors.
A concerning new trend in mammal infections of the highly contagious flu has been identified, with wild animals such as foxes, raccoons and skunks contracting the virus in North America.Hundreds of sea lions died recently in Peru of avian flu, and other animals, including dolphins, have also been affected.
