Shawn Micallef: Toronto: The city that works (unless you’re working class)

There’s an ugly anti-working-class sentiment percolating in some parts of Toronto, parts that once welcomed them.

Efforts to go back to how it was, when a day’s business could all be done a short walk away, are being met with resistance. Turning an old, midblock store back into a functioning store or café is difficult, often impossible. This could allow retail and other commercial operations in lowrise buildings in neighbourhoods. City staff say it “recognizes the historic role walkable retail and services have played in Toronto’s neighbourhoods, and the need to support the daily life and activities of residents and workers, and encourage complete, connected communities.”

It’s the same with other forms of retail, like greengrocers and convenience stores. Walk through any of the older neighbourhoods in Toronto and you’re sure to find stores that were built in or onto houses. Perhaps the most famous one of all in the country, Kim’s Convenience on Queen Street East, followed this model. They made Toronto’s streetscape and life here better.
