Toronto’s Devlin DeFrancesco wrapped up the best qualifying result of his IndyCar rookie season and will start 12th in the Honda Indy Toronto.
That gives the 22-year-old driver with at least a shot at his first podium finish when the checkered flag flies around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
DeFrancesco benefitted from some wildly inconsistent performances in Saturday’s qualifying. He was actually the slowest in the second round, but 12 drivers with faster times had been knocked out by penalties or wrecks. DeFrancesco was also penalized and docked his two quickest laps, but still advanced to the second round where seventh through 12th place were determined.
“I was a little worried that I’d have to take a session in qualifying to get back into it,” Herta said. “The seating position is so different , but it was like turning a switch back on once I got into the car.”
