Testifying in his own defence, Saaid Mohiadin, 33, who performs as Flippa, said he had no knowledge of the Nov. 4, 2019, execution-style killing of the 50-year-old outside the Via Allegro restaurant across from busy Sherway Gardens mall in Etobicoke.
The sound of rap music filled a downtown courtroom on Wednesday as a Toronto jury got a crash course in the city’s drill scene while a local rapper denied any involvement in the brazen daylight murder of Antonio Fiorda.
Tall and lanky and wearing thick braids running past his shoulders and wearing a dark blue suit, Mohiadin’s initial nerves eased as he described how he was born in Somalia before coming to Toronto when he was a year old. He and his six siblings settled with their parents in Lawrence Heights, one of the city’s most impoverished neighbourhoods near Yorkdale. His dad drove a truck, later a taxi. His mom stayed at home.
In November 2019, around the time of the shooting, Mohiadin said he was staying in a downtown Airbnb condo at 455 Front St. with four or five other men, including Brown, and a man he knew only as “Big Crow.” He testified he still doesn’t know his name. Mohiadin acknowledged he is the man who appears in photos and videos but said he wasn’t celebrating, just “rapping.” All the money belonged to Brown, not him. And any firearms that he appears to be brandishing were imitation “props” he found in a recording studio.
