Toronto Police began investigating around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday after “someone was seen spreading chemicals on the grass” at an unleashed dog park beside an apartment building near Summerland Terrace and Dundas St. W. in Etobicoke.“ reported that their dog was sick for a couple of days, and had a cough following July 15,” she said.
“Officers were directed to an area in the leash free zone that appeared to have crushed particles of a white/grey powder like substance,:” Brabant said. “While officers were on scene, they were approached by at least three other dog owners who advised their dogs also got sick with a cough/pneumonia like symptoms.”
Brabant said the substance was collected and handed over for testing to the Toronto Police Service EDU and it’s believed to be a salt substitute.“It’s still under investigation,” said Brabant of whether the dog park is reopened yet, adding it’s up to the apartment complex to do so. There are no suspects at this time, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact police at 416-808-2200 or 416-808-2222.
