Olivia Chow is Toronto’s next mayor. The former NDP MP and veteran city councillor clinched the race to replace John Tory Monday after a bruising 12-week campaign that saw her many rivals claim her victory would mean disaster for the city.
Toronto’s new mayor-elect delivered a speech to supporters following her victory.
“Don’t give up, Toronto is a place of hope, a place of second chances. A city where an immigrant kid from St. James Town can be standing in front of you as your new mayor.” “However we turn the volume down on Mark Saunders is a really good thing,” Matlow began his speech to raucous cheers from his supporters.
“Toronto, I believe in you,” he said near the end of his remarks. “I believe that if we are intentional, if we are clear and we are honest, there is no problem that we can’t fix.” —Former Ontario minister of education Mitzie Hunter walked into the Don on Danforth to cheers and whistles from her supporters. With almost all of the polls reporting, she had about 3 per cent of the vote.
“Tonight is about thanking all of the friends and family, volunteers, supporters for their involvement, their engagement and Torontonians across the city who took the time to welcome me into their house or their small business or to chat with me at a transit stop.” Over the next three years, “we all have to work together to make us safe, healthy and strong environment. I spoke on public safety. I spoke on affordability and I spoke on traffic congestion and a whole bunch of other things. And I want to help to see what needs to be done to move that forward.”“We’ll see what tomorrow brings,” he said. “But right now we all have to be positive to move forward so that we can continue to have Toronto to be the legacy city in the greatest city in the world.
As Ontario and Toronto continue to grow, it’s never been more important to get on with building homes and public transit, especially where they can be built together to create communities where people can live, work, and enjoy time with their friends and family.
Still, Matlow’s satisfied with the campaign’s he’s run. Many of the ideas thrown around during debates, he continued, were ones he said his campaign proposed, including “addressing the root causes of violence rather than just reacting” and establishing a “public builder to build affordable housing.”Polls begin to close across TorontoSupporters of all ages are starting to file into Metropolitan Centre in Scarborough before Anthony Furey arrives with his family.
