Toronto Council has voted for zoning bylaw amendments to permit rooming or multiplex houses even in suburbs where previously banned.

In a move designed to support the creation of more affordable housing, council ordered zoning bylaw amendments to permit a maximum of six dwelling rooms per multi-tenant house in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, where rooming houses were illegal, and up to 12 to 26 dwelling rooms in other parts of Toronto, beginning in 2024.As the Canadian national soccer teams head to their respective FIFA World Cups, Derek Van Diest is on the scene to cover all the action.

The mayor added that based on his city-wide door-knocking during last October’s municipal election, people in the city are ready to embrace the change needed to meet or exceed the province’s call for 285,000 new homes in the next decade. Councillor Stephen Holyday said he’s not sure that everyone is ready to accept the level of change contemplated in the city reports, especially the goal of exceeding provincial housing targets..Many suburban residents are not ready to embrace multiplex housing, the possible use of school board sites for housing and more generally permissive zoning, he said.

“If you vote for that remember that every time you go into a development meeting,” Holyday told his fellow council members. “Or you face somebody who complains about a Committee of Adjustment proposal, or someone says the line-up to get into a swim program is too long or there’s too much congestion on the road. Careful what you wish for.”
