Mayor John Tory is urging city staff to activate park amenities like drinking fountains and washrooms earlier in the spring.

Mayor John Tory is urging city staff to activate park amenities like drinking fountains and washrooms earlier in the year, following annual complaints from residents who say waiting until well into the spring to turn on the facilities makes it harder to get out and enjoy the city’s green spaces.at city council next week would direct staff to “modernize park operations” by instituting service improvements earlier in the year.

The mayor reported earlier that as of May 31, only about 60 per cent of the city’s 700 public fountains were operable. That’s despite his administration acknowledging that demand for parks is beginning earlier each year, likely due to population growth and climate change. Layton said he’s never received as many complaints from residents about non-functional washrooms and fountains as he has this year, and described access to the facilities as an important public health and equity issue that disproportionately affects seniors and people with mobility issues.

Matlow also took aim at the mayor’s approach to funding park amenities. “After he’s broken the toilet, he’s pretending to be the plumber,” he said.
