Although Abdelhaleem remains on a life sentence, he now rejects extremism and will be able to freely live in the community if he does not breach his parole

“You acknowledge your responsibility for the crimes you committed, although you tend to minimize your responsibility and to be defensive when your actions are questioned.

Abdelhaleem was born in Egypt and grew up in, as he called it, “a typical Middle Eastern family.” They moved to various places in the Middle East and England before immigrating to Canada. He had permanent resident status here until he became a Canadian citizen in 1993. In 1994 he enrolled in a four-year university computer science program but failed to finish his degree. His father was disappointed.

That prompted him to reconnect with his Islamic faith and started regular attendance at a mosque, which was where he met a fiery young Islamic man, Zakaria Amara, the terror plot’s ringleader. “You wanted to be considered by the Muslim community as a hero who stopped the war in Iraq,” the board summarized.

“You were looking into the plausibility of this scenario and even consulted with an accountant and a person involved in the stock market.”His prison flag as a member of the Toronto 18 terrorist group was deactivated in 2019, he remained classed as a high-profile offender within the institution.
