Following news that beloved British brand ChristopherKane has appointed administrators in a bid to save the business, Vogue’s Laura Hawkins reflects on her love affair with the label.
As a brand, Christopher Kane has always been able to navigate our concept of taste, and what it means – stylistically and emotionally – to be a woman. Lace, saccharine shades, crystal embellishments, delicate florals… the co-founders turned these motifs of conventional femininity – and brand tropes – on their head time and again.
The chainmail party dress Christopher and Tammy Kane designed for my second bridal look – inspired by a dress famously worn by Kate Moss. I first tried my Christopher Kane wedding dress on back in 2019, when, newly engaged, I knew exactly which brand to turn to first. Thanks to a postponed wedding , I didn’t actually walk down the aisle until three years later in 2022, but that dress always remained The One. At my promised fitting, Christopher and Tammy even encouraged me to wear a floor-length veil, something I was initially against, for fear of looking too conventional or “look-at-me”.
