We also wanted to use our closing debate statement for a message that was unabashedly aspirational. Smith’s longest serving adviser came up with something that Albertans told us stuck with them in the dying days of the campaign: we captured the spirit of Alberta. On Friday morning it was like an anvil had been lifted off everyone’s chests, including the premier. Candidates were calling and texting. The messages of praise were coming from unexpected quarters, including people who had been either passively critical or actively hostile toward Smith. Everybody was fired up. The ethics commissioner report, released just a day earlier, was already behind us.
The NDP had made a monumental mistake. Notley had given the business community something tangible to think about. And they were starting to notice. We’ll never know if the NDP would have won without this gaffe, but I guarantee there’s a lot of soul searching happening in the pubs of Edmonton this week. The tax hike gave the UCP something to rally around and a focal point for the economic risk that had been — up till that point — purely hypothetical.
“In every election I’ve lost, I’ve been the issue,” he said. “And in every election I’ve won, it’s been the other guy.”
