Emergency warnings have been issued for five out-of-control bushfires burning in the northern part of NSW, as firefighters brace for 'extreme' conditions on Friday

Emergency warnings have been issued for five out-of-control bushfires burning in the northern part of NSW, as firefighters brace for "extreme" conditions on Friday.

The Gospers Mountain fire in the Wollemi National Park burns strongly under westerly winds on Thursday.The fire is moving in a north-easterly direction through the Torrington State Forest. People in the area of Silent Grove, Maids Valley and Mole River are instructed to "shelter in place as the fire approaches [and] protect yourself from the heat of the fire".

Two other fires are at the "watch and act" level on the Mid North Coast: one next to Port Macquarie Airport and one at Crowdy Bay National Park. Firefighters are facing a horrific 48 hours with hot and windy conditions causing havoc as new fires start and existing fires jump containment lines.Friday's weather forecast is even worse, with strong westerly winds predicted to sweep across much of the state.
