While 132 South Africans will be airlifted home from the coronavirus (Covid-19) epicentre in Wuhan, Dawn Yvonne Petzer isn’t one of them.
Johannesburg - Dawn Yvonne Petzer is in no rush to head back home to South Africa. While 132 South Africans will be airlifted home from the coronavirus epicentre in Wuhan, Petzer isn’t one of them.
On Thursday, the Presidency announced that the government would repatriate the country’s citizens from Wuhan city in Hubei province “after due consideration of the circumstances, and following several requests from the families of South Africans in the city”. By last night, 2858 deaths had been recorded in the outbreak, with 83310 cases globally. The virus has now spread to 49 countries with the World Health Organisation raising the threat assessment at a global level to “very high”.
“The African region has recorded a new positive case of Covid-19 in Nigeria on February 27. Given these recent developments globally and in Africa, it is not unlikely that we will have importation of Covid-19 to SA.” “The NICD is working with international partners to learn from their experiences, to keep the public and the repatriated persons well and healthy.”
She stressed that in 80% of cases, those infected exhibited mild symptoms. “But among them, some will be super spreaders and super shredders.
