Discovery Green is finally kickstarting its Thursday Concert series with an 'American Idol' hopeful from Houston.

The Cypress native toured the country as part of the pop group Stamps and earned a fan in Perez Hilton. Singer and guitarist Oliver Penn, who combines blues, rock and soul, opens the show.
The annual series, presented by University of Houston-Downtown, runs through May 19 at Discovery Green. All concerts are free and run 7-9:30 p.m. The lineup includes regional Mexican, hip-hop and pop performers.
