Tuesday, June 6: Inadequate parking at the Civic campus of The Ottawa Hospital shouldn\u0027t result in penalties for patients or staff.
Activate your Online Access NowI am a resident physician at The Ottawa Hospital. I recently had to attend the Civic campus of the hospital but was unable to get to the parking lot, where I pay for parking, due to the traffic back-up caused by limited parking availability. The only place to park in the vicinity had a “no parking sign” . I left a note on my dashboard explaining the situation and returned within 15 minutes to try to move my car to another location.
My experience is not uncommon. I have had colleagues, including other physicians and nurses, arrive late for a shift or have difficulty getting to the hospital in an emergent situation due to the back-up of parking. More importantly, patients trying to attend appointments often spend a lot of time searching for parking and, in a hurry, they park in the no parking area only to get ticketed.
As health-care providers, we will always prioritize patient care. If that means parking in a no parking zone and getting ticketed because parking is limited, we will always choose that over poor patient care. No one goes to the hospital for “fun.” We go to the hospital because of sickness or to care for sick people. The fact that the city is ticketing people trying to get to a hospital because they themselves are sick, they have family members who are sick, or they are trying to care for the sick is simply unacceptable.
One potential solution would be to temporarily pause ticketing in the 9-to-5 no parking zones within the vicinity of the hospital, as these tend to be the hours that the parking garage is full. If this is not feasible, we must come up with immediate solutions because ticketing patients and their families as well as the people who care for them is simply not right.
