Friday, Jan. 13: Readers share views of light rail after the recent shutdown.

I have seen much criticism of the LRT in the Citizen but, having ridden on it during my visits to Ottawa and seen its development over a decade or more, I see it as a well-designed and mostly reliable system.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

The criticism in some letters does not offer any real alternatives to the current LRT. Trams need to keep running to keep ice off the overhead wires. Diesel power is not an alternative given the underground sections and the already existing overhead catenary. I only know of one hydrogen-powered system on order in North America, so ironing out the faults with the current LRT appears to be the best solution.

This system is much better and less expensive than driving into and parking in the city. When bad weather comes to Ottawa, all transport is affected and last Sunday afternoon when the trams could not run, replacement buses were provided along with very helpful OC Transpo staff. On my future visits to Canada, I look forward to seeing the whole system completed and enjoying car-free transport.
