Reining in municipal building fees can help make housing affordableOntario Housing Minister Steve Clark claims that development charges are too high and that by reducing them, thousands of new homes are suddenly getting built.
Ontario’s Official Plan determines the supply of housing needed to accommodate growth over several decades. Thousands of homes are already being built each year. Generally, housing goes in areas well served by roads and infrastructure. As well, parks and green space are allocated for residents’ quality of life while farmland and natural areas are protected.Article content
A quick online search shows that development charges for a new single detached home in Ottawa are $39,700 inside the greenbelt and $46,993 outside. This is far short of the $100,000 to $150,000 quoted by Clark. Under the Official Plan, communities should be well planned and livable. Growth must be sustainable. Cities need to be able to manage their budgets without provincial interference.Article content
