Friday, June 16: Call it whatever you want\u003B the locals have their own labels for this road, readers note.

Last time I checked, “Ottawa” was derived from the Algonquin word “adawe,” which means “to trade.”Kichi Zibi Mikan means “great river” in the Algonquin language, and Mikan is the word for road or path. Good to know, I suppose, but I can tell the bright lights at the NCC right now that there will be very few people driving down the Kichi Zibi Mikan parkway. What’s in a name? Nothing, really

So we’re going to have a new name for the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway. Makes no difference. Ottawans have never stopped calling it the western parkway and we probably never will.Article contentWhat a pleasure it has been to drive down Wellington Street these past few weeks: lovely buildings, lots of sky and less driving time.

The dark Queen Street “tunnel” was definitely not good for the environment, as you often had to sit and wait for someone to turn left, under the “no left turn” sign at O’Connor. You usually couldn’t get around buses loading and unloading passengers. Then there were garbage days and waiting for the truck to get onto the sidewalk so cars could pass. Finally, there was waiting through a light for an articulated bus turning left at Bank Street.

There is a two-tier health care system. Our politicians have access to private doctors and preferred care. If they had to deal with our walk-in clinics and emergency rooms, they would certainly see health care as a priority. I suggest that they use the same system as the rest of us. Only then will they see how urgent the need is.
