Thursday, June 22: Gatineau has lessons to teach this city about road safety, says one reader.
Laurie Brown, LuskvilleOttawa Coun. Ariel Troster has pointed out the potential and real dangers of cycling along Gladstone Avenue, and no doubt that is a real concern.
Therefore, I would propose a campaign to actively discourage bike use on Gladstone and to actively encourage it on neighbouring, adjacent streets with much less car, bus and truck traffic — in other words, an active safety campaign, with bike lanes or bollards as needed. Truck and commuter traffic is increasing and there seems to be a collision every month. It is a four-way crossing. Bowesville is a major cycling route but it crosses Leitrim Road and Mitch Owens and it has been converted to a truck route until the LRT is finished at which time, a councillor’s office told me, it will be repaved. I can sympathize with the frustration of victims and their relatives about dangerous city intersections.
