Today in Canada’s Political History: Saul Rae appointed Canada’s Ambassador to the United Nations

century diplomats received a promotion on this date in 1962. Saul Rae, a career foreign service officer, was named Ambassador to the United Nations by the Diefenbaker government. Saul’s son, Bob Rae, serves in the same post today.

Saul Rae joined the Department of External Affairs in 1940 and went on to hold a variety of important posts during his distinguished career. He was Ambassador to Mexico, part of the Canadian team at one of the Quebec Conferences held by Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt , twice was Ambassador to the UN, and also served at Canada’s embassy in the United States.is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon.
