On this date in 1885 the Dominion of Canada’s first-ever Minister of Agriculture, Quebec Father of Confederation, Jean-Charles Chapais, passed into history.
A veteran of his province’s pre-Confederation politics and member of the National Assembly in Quebec City, Chapais became federal Minister of Agriculture on July 1, 1867, the day the Dominion of Canada was born. He went on to hold that crucial post until November 1869 when Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald shuffled him to another cabinet position.
