Today in Canada’s Political History: Maiden Commons speech of future Speaker Anthony Rota
It was a big moment in the life and career of the future Speaker of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota, on this date in 2005. He delivered his maiden address as a MP, participating in a debate involving the Canadian Coast Guard. Little could he have imagined that 14 years-later he would be serving as Speaker of the House.
Voters first sent Rota to the Commons in 2004 as a Liberal MP and he served until his 2011 defeat. In 2015, however, he returned to the House and has been re-elected ever since. Rota was elected Speaker by his colleague MPs in 2019.https://www.ourcommons.ca/DocumentViewer/en/38-1/house/sitting-119/hansard#Int-1358883is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.
