Mackenzie King, now a Deputy Minister, was in England on this date in 1908. During his visit he enjoyed having a luncheon with Winston Churchill.

“One cannot talk with him without being impressed at the nimbleness of his mind, his quickness of perception and his undoubted ability,” King wrote in his trusty diary. “He seems to have a lost a good of the egotism, at least so far as his manner is concerned, though one feels that even yet it is Churchill rather than the movement with which he is identified that is the mainspring of his conduct.”

On the same trip, another politician on the rise, Andrew Bonar Law, a future UK PM who was born in New Brunswick, introduced King to a senior British official the following way: “You will welcome Mr. King someday as the Prime Minister of Canada.” It was no surprise that King quite enjoyed the introduction.is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.
