One of Quebec’s most important journalist-politicians was invested as a Companion of the Order of Canada on this date in 1995. Claude Ryan, his province’s Liberal leader and the man who led the provincial “No” side in the 1980 Quebec Referendum, was Leader of the Opposition at Quebec’s National Assembly from 1978 until 1982. After the Referendum and the return to power of the provincial Liberals, this time led by Robert Bourassa, Ryan served as Minister of Education from 1985 until 1989.
