King George V, who had served as Monarch since 1910, passed into history on this date in 1936. His 16-year reign had seen him lead the United Kingdom, and his Dominions like Canada, through the First World War. He was 70 when he died, with his son, Edward Prince of Wales then succeeding him. King Edward, however, would serve less than a year on the Throne before abdicating in favour of his brother in December 1936. He was then granted the title of Duke of Windsor and lived until 1972.
