To vote or not to vote? Inner city residents weigh their options
For 64-year-old Nelly Motswagole, the ANC of Mandela “opened her eyes to new and unknown things”. This is what has kept her hope alive for a better life and cemented her support for the governing party.
While she was disappointed in the current government, Motswagole said there was nothing else to do but vote in November’s local government elections, adding that she had high hopes that “one day things will get better”. Following the special two-day registration weekend in September, the Electoral Commission of SA applauded young South Africans for coming out in their numbers to register to vote, while some youngsters considered voting “a futile exercise”.Motswagole added: “The best thing to do is just accept and vote.”
“I am really not sure because those who are currently in power are failing. The ANC is failing us,” she told City Press.“We cannot continue to depend on empty promises. Promises of job creation, housing, as well as basic services like water and electricity. But mention the word corruption and they are at the forefront.”
“The crime is increasing and buildings in the area have been taken over by foreign nationals. We have become second-class citizens.”“We also still have the ability to work. Why is there no focus on people over the age of 35 who are still willing and able to work? However, for Gift Ndlangisa , who also resides in Yeoville and has previously not been able to vote as he “did not have an ID until a few years ago,” the state of impoverishment he finds himself in is more than reason enough to vote.
