For World Mental Health week, two women have written powerful letters to their past selves to let them know that life is worth living. She experiences bipolar disorder, and once felt that her only option was to take her own life. Her mum took her to hospital, and since then she has recovered through stays in hospital, working with a crisis team, group therapy and medication.Recently you attended a wedding in Czech Republic, not really knowing anybody on the guest list.
You no longer feel like you have to keep struggles a secret. Your friends and family have been wonderful when you’ve opened up. There was nothing to be scared of!It’s going to be a long and hard recovery. But actually, this terrible crisis point where you felt like you couldn’t go on - after an evening in the pub with your friends - will lead to you finally getting the diagnosis, long term care and medication that you need.
I can’t lie to you, things aren’t always easy but I think that’s obvious. I can’t remember a time when we didn’t have anxiety and depression, and it may always be in us, but you know how to cope now. I can see you in my mind so clearly. The sore shadows underneath your eyes that impeccable makeup doesn’t quite cover, your cheeks hollowed out by hunger you no longer feel, criss-crosses of scars covered by office wear. Outside you have everything you could ever want, but inside you’re in hell.
But none of that matters now. As hard as that road was, I would travel it a thousand times over to be where I am today.
