Jenny Buckshot Tenasco watched the apology by Pope Francis for a while, but got angry.
“It is necessary to remember how the policies of assimilation and enfranchisement, which also included the residential school system, were devastating for the people of these lands,” the Pope said, adding that he was “deeply sorry” for how “many Christians supported the colonizing mentality of the powers that oppressed the Indigenous Peoples.”
“I went to residential school in Kenora, Ontario in 1958. I was six years old when I was taken from my home. And they took my older sister, who was 16. It wasn’t only the Pope or the church involved, but also the Indian agent at the time, the community nurse and our local priest. They were all white, and they decided who was going to go and who was going to stay.
“So I feel very angry and sad about how this visit is unfolding in this country, especially with the picture of the headdress on the Pope. The group that went to Rome were handpicked so they could represent all of us here without controversy. They shouldn’t have had to perform and look up to the Pope like he was a god.“I feel also that in reconciliation, the church and the government should provide better drinking water and better housing for all First Nations people.
“Everything was already planned for the Pope. His speeches were written. They probably have a board of governors in the Vatican, where they know where the money is going to go, what the Pope is going to do and what he’s going to say. So to me, he’s just a puppet, to settle things down a little bit, like this issue about residential schools here in North America.Article content
