Two Ohio State football coaches who owned Michigan counseled Ryan Day about getting back on course in the rivalry.

For now, Day is concerned most with Indiana, in order to ensure the stakes of the 12th game on the schedule remain elevated. During the offseason, though, he turned to both of his immediate predecessors for advice. The Game was one of “a million subjects” Tressel said he and Day conversed about while both attended the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer fundraiser.

While it served as a directive for his team and staff, it was a message he could internalize as well. Those problems Tressel diagnosed were not apparent in the Peach Bowl, where OSU had the ball with a chance to take the lead in the final seconds but lost 42-41 to the eventual repeat national champions.

Ohio State went to the transfer portal for three offensive or defensive linemen. Josh Simmons will start at left tackle at Indiana. Vic Cutler will be on the two-deep at center. Tywone Malone immediately rises to or near the depth chart at defensive tackle. That, ultimately, is the point Tressel and Meyer both made. Michigan is supposed to be one of the elite programs in the country. Ohio State must figure out a way to win anyway.

Over the summer, both said they are fully confident in Day’s ability to regain footing in the series.
