A suspected Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD) officer was arrested in Mpumalanga for his alleged involvement in a hijacking and theft incident. Police are actively pursuing his accomplices.
A suspected Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department ( TMPD ) officer was apprehended in Mpumalanga in relation to a hijacking and theft incident in Sundra, Delmas. According to a report published by Pretoria Rekord, Mpumalanga police stated that the officer was arrested on Wednesday, and authorities are actively pursuing his accomplices.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Jabu Ndubane revealed that the officer and his associates allegedly hijacked a security personnel escorting a courier truck. Ndubane explained that the victim reported that while driving one of the escort vehicles, another vehicle pulled alongside the convoy, activated blue lights, and emitted a siren. 'When the victim pulled over, he was ordered to lie down by the gang. They searched him and took his firearm,' she stated. She added that the suspects drove off with the security escort but eventually dropped him off in Delmas. 'The victim encountered police and reported the matter. They swiftly initiated a search for the suspects, and within a few minutes, the TMPD officer was arrested,' Ndubane said. Ndubane further disclosed that when police apprehended the suspect, he was found stuck in mud. He was transported to Sundra Police Station for processing, and it was determined that he is employed by the TMPD in Pretoria. Ndubane noted that the suspect's accomplices managed to escape the scene. 'More arrests are anticipated as the police are following leads to the remaining suspects,' she emphasized. Pretoria Rekord reached out to the TMPD, but spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba had not issued a statement at the time of publication. Tshwane MMC for Community Safety Hannes Coetzee confirmed that the case has been transferred to the police commissioner. 'Our investigators have already visited the SAPS station to conduct an investigation, and the necessary steps will be taken,' he stated. Coetzee added that the TMPD is awaiting feedback and will provide a comprehensive statement on the matter once more information becomes available to city officials.
