The clash between the Springboks and Wales will see the TMO empowered with more influence than ever before.

There are undoubtedly going to be a host of talking points from the Springboks’ season-opening Test against Wales this Saturday, and another one has now undoubtedly been added to the ‘waiting list’.

World Rugby has confirmed it is operating an initial closed trial of modifications to the Television Match Protocol during several events in July. And in addition, this will also apply to the Springboks’ game against Wales on Saturday. Under the revised protocol, the TMO will now have the additional power to highlight clear and obvious infringements in the final passage of play to the referee, including knock-ons and forward passes.

In layman’s terms, it means that in real time during any ongoing phase of play, the TMO will now have the power to alert referees to knock-ons and forward passes. The live TMO referrals will be used when the on-field team has missed a clear and obvious incident/decision that does not need a formal referral, but it will again raise questions about whether the flow of the game will be further disrupted by officials.
