Vrabel’s reaction Sunday marks one difference between the Jones and Hopkins situations. He was transparently leery about Jones, going so far as to call Nick Saban to get an idea of what he would be encountering after Robinson landed him. He spent four seasons in Houston with Hopkins, some of the best of a career that will likely land Hopkins in Canton.
When ESPN’s Pat McAfee asked Vrabel about landing Hopkins during a charity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nev., Vrabel looked and acted more like a guy excited about a purchase than examining a warranty. And, yes, Clowney had Houston history with Vrabel too and that turned out to be quite a flop in 2020.
But nothing from anyone else in the past matters when it comes to Hopkins in 2023. He might yet be great and capable of a fully healthy season. Even if he’s just good, and for part of a season, that lends significant help to what was formerly the weakest position group on the team.He’s a tremendous player for Burks to observe and learn from, and together they could be a problem for defenses in the next couple of seasons. The Titans had to find a way to make that possible.
