Teacher and actor Lew Palter, best known for playing Isidor Straus who hugged his wife on the bed as the ship started to sink in the 1997 movie Titanic, has passed away

Actor and teacher Lew Palter, who is best known for starring in the 1997 movie The Titanic, has passed away.

Lew was best known for playing real-life department store magnate Isidor Straus in James Cameron's movie Titanic which also featured Kate Winslet as Rose and Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack. When Lew was not on the big screen he was working as an acting professor at California Institute of Arts, also known as CalArts.

It read: "Palter joined CalArts in 1971, serving as an acting teacher, director and mentor until his retirement in 2013. That same year, actress Cecily strong returned to CalArts to speak with School of Theatre students, where she explained that it was Palter who encouraged her to try out for legendary improv/sketch comedy troupe The Groundlings, leading her to breakout role on SNL."
