The party knows it will face an uphill climb when Justin Trudeau looks to win his fourth election in a row.

“There’s always a best-before date on a government,” Coletto said. “We saw it with the Harper government, and you’ve seen it with the Chrétien and Martin years as well.”

Thirty-six policy resolutions were voted on at the convention and 24 were accepted, though none are binding to the party. A number of those accepted were designed to appeal to young, progressive Canadians. These include establishing a Windsor to Quebec City high-speed rail link, the creation of more affordable housing and several resolutions to combat climate change. A resolution to change the voting age to 17 did not pass.

“I think we’re going in the right direction,” Olsen, 23, said. “We just need to make sure we couple that with the activism that has always drawn in young people.” Some party members and supporters feel the party has abandoned fiscal responsibility, a key issue on many Canadians’ minds, Enns said. Scarborough-Guildwood Liberal MP John McKay is among those who think balancing the budget should be a priority for the party. “I do think that you need to pay for what you commit to,” McKay told reporters last week.
