I WOULD like to add a few words to Kevin Walker’s thoughtful letter of September 19. On 16 January 1707 the Scottish Parliament debated the treaty…
Kevin Walker’s thoughtful letter of September 19
The decision was extremely unpopular and there were mass riots, as the English spy Daniel Dafoe had warned. The excuse of the “rogues” was that an English army at the border was ready to invade if the vote went the wrong way – they didn’t mention the bribes, but Rabbie did. As Wallace probably would have declared – better to die fighting than on your knees. The Union has never been fully accepted in Scotland, with riots, battles and skirmishes against it from the beginning.
The tragedy is that there has been so little encouragement from the Scottish Government to build on that close result and carry support to well over 50%., so granting Scotland, with all its abundant assets, the means to democratically achieve independence is beyond comprehension. Perhaps cynically, I don’t think Kevin’s reasonable suggestions will ever come to pass. The well-behaved marches and gatherings are important to keep our message in the public domain in Scotland.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
