Nova Scotia's plan to fight the climate crisis is more effective and costs taxpayers much less than the federal carbon tax being forced on us, Premier Tim Houston writes.

Premier Tim Houston: "In other words, our plan will exceed the federal government’s 2030 carbon-tax goal and do it without a harmful new tax." - Ryan TaplinTim Houston is the premier of Nova Scotia.

We did this by investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency programs, becoming national leaders. It will not only increase the price of gas, diesel and home heating fuel, but also the goods and services you depend on — groceries, clothing, building materials, school supplies and much more. This tax will force businesses to increase their prices.

Our plan will cut Nova Scotia’s total emissions by at least 53 per cent from 2005 levels by the year 2030 and set us on the pathway to net zero by 2050. In comparison, the federal 2030 target is only 40 to 45 per cent. In fact, I have told the federal government to hold us accountable to these targets. If we do not meet them, I will accept that a carbon tax is required.Despite our plan being better for the environment and better for your wallet, the federal government has indicated that it will not accept our plan because it does not include carbon pricing. They are choosing to add a tax to address climate change rather than accept a plan that does more for the environment, and costs Nova Scotians less.
