Three corporate sponsors have announced that they’re pulling support for Hockey Canada’s men’s programming for the 2022-23 year amid government calls for “profound changes.”

Tim Hortons cited disappointment with the organization’s “lack of progress.” Similarly, Scotiabank announced that its sponsorship pause “remains in effect,” including for the upcoming World Junior Championship. On Thursday, Telus Corp. announced it will not be sponsoring Hockey Canada’s men's hockey programs for the 2022-23 season, including the upcoming World Juniors tournament.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Hockey Canada needs to take the situation it faces amid allegations of abuse and sexual assaults in the sport more seriously. Sport Minister Pascale St-Onge commends Hockey Quebec for cutting funding ties to the national organization. the federal sports minister urged the organization’s members to remove senior leadership.

“I completely understand the decision of Hockey Quebec, which has lost confidence in Hockey Canada just like all of us here in Ottawa, just like parents across the country,” Trudeau said in French. St-Onge said the provincial body’s decision “sends the message to the leaders at the organization that are holding on to their jobs that Hockey Canada doesn’t belong to them. It also belongs to their members, and they want change. They want a change of culture and they want to fight against sexual violence.”
