Dermatologists can't agree on whether skin flooding is good or not
TikTok is the birthplace of many of today's viral beauty trends, with one of the newest 'skin flooding' dividing dermatologists. Some say it risks damaging your skin's natural skin barrier, while others are praising the trend for encouraging people to hydrate their skin.
On the trend, skincare experts at Absolute Collagen have warned that the viral skin-flooding hack could actually be having adverse effects, including damaging the skin's natural barrier, resulting in dry and itchy skin. The hashtag #skinflooding has had 43 million views on TikTok, while videos containing #glowyskin have accumulated a staggering 120 million views in the last year alone.
"Certain skincare products have ingredients that may react with each other when combined. For example, mixing certain retinoids with acids in a regular routine can damage the face’s skin barrier, resulting in dry, itchy skin." Meanwhile, other dermatologists endorse skin flooding when done properly for those who have knowledge of what they're putting on their faces. Explaining to Huffington Post about how to skin flood, Dr Marisa Garshick said there are four main steps.
