If the legislation becomes law, ByteDance will have nine months to find a buyer for the video-sharing app with an extension of three months.
The House of Representatives has passed a bill that may lead to a country-wide ban on TikTok if its owner ByteDance refuses to sell the platform. The Senate may vote on the legislation by Tuesday.
The House voted 360 to 58 on the updated divest-or-ban bill against TikTok. President Joe Biden said earlier that he would sign the legislation. “We will not stop fighting and advocating for you. We will continue to do all we can, including exercising our legal rights, to protect this amazing platform that we have built with you,” said TikTok’s chief Shou Zi Chew last month after the House passed an order against the platform.
