The 13-year-old consumed at least 7 Benadryl pills on April 15 as part of a social media challenge, his mother said.
The parents rushed the teenager to a local hospital, where he was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit before being transferred to Jersey Shore Medical Center, the woman said.
A search of the teen’s phone showed he’d been texting a friend on how many Benadryl he should take to join the TikTok challenge. From the texts, the woman believes her son took more than seven pills, which are 25mg each. While he remembers taking the antihistamine, he doesn’t remember exactly how many he took, she said.
The woman and her husband have since purchased locking metal cabinets to keep items they consider dangerous out of the reach of their children, she said.
