McCarthy and Schottenheimer, who were first connected by NFL coaching royalty, will work together in the HC-OC capacity for the first time.

“I think the fun thing for us when we came back in the spring were the different experiences,’’ Schottenheimer said. “We had these foundation principles, but him going to San Francisco, New Orleans and Green Bay. Me going to the Jets and St. Louis and Seattle. There were different ways to do it.“He’s been exposed to things and I would be, ‘Ahh, I love that.’ Or I had an idea and he would say, ‘I’ve never done that, but I love it. That’s a cool idea. Let’s put that into our offense here.

McCarthy believes in slide protection. Part of him wanted to make a clean, philosophical break and throw out the pocket concepts the linemen had been working under.“For sure,’’ Schottenheimer said. “That’s where I think Brian is a huge asset in our ability to connect because he’s able to sort through the minutiae that bogs you down and effects the efficiency and the application,’’ McCarthy said. “It’s really the ability to tighten it down.He had worked with McCarthy and Schottenheimer in previous stops and would be integral in teaching the new techniques.

“The players have been great,’’ Schottenheimer said. “Mike is real big on the why. What helps a player retain information is you tell them what they’re doing, but then you explain why.“There is huge power in that. They can go back to that in the heat of the game when the fur is flying and understand the why. Here’s why we’re sliding this. Here’s why we’re going to declare to this individual player. They’ve been very receptive and very excited.
