Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, led by military juntas, are introducing new biometric passports as they formally distance themselves from the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas). The move comes after the three nations announced their withdrawal from Ecowas in January following a series of coups.

Following the coups, West African countries sanctioned the juntas, aiming to push them to quickly restore civilian rule. He said they were also planning to launch a joint service that would promote a “harmonious dissemination of information in our three states”. The latest announcement comes as Ecowas is engaged in efforts to get the three Sahel nations to return to the bloc.
