Apple's Peek Performance event brought us the Mac Studio, but the Macs that were not announced are far more interesting.
With the iMac launched this time last year, launching an iMac Pro this year welt like Apple’s tick-tock rhythm at work. Instead we saw a new design of Mac in the Mac Studio
Spec wise the Mac Studio could easily be seen as the equivalent of an Apple Silicon powered iMac Pro. Design wise there are a world apart, with the latter based on the mac Mini footprint, and the former based on the iMac’s all-in-the-monitor approach. But the intentions of both machines are the same; to serve the creatives and offer more power in a deskbound environment not restricted by a need for mobility.
I wonder if we’ll see an iMac Pro? I pretty sure that the branding team will want one to sit nicely in the portfolio, but has the Mac Studio taken that space?Probably a long shot to show up at Peek Performance, but with Tim Cook’s statement that the full Mac range would be running Apple Silicon by the end of 2022 means that a new ARM-based Mac Pro has less than nine months to arrive. One key step may have been on show at the event.
Does this option stip at two M1 Max chipsets? Could the Mac Pro take this concept and run with four chipsets? Eight? Sixteen? That would certainly deliver an excess of power and make the Mac Pro one of the most powerful computers available to the public on the planet. With Apple starting low and slow with the MacBook Air, the Mac Pro is surely going to be the last update to the Mac portfolio.
