Watson intentionally threw 13 passes out of play in six games last season, which is only six fewer than his career-high over a full season. If he threw passes away at his 2022 rate over a full season, he would finish with 34 throw-aways, which would smash his old season-high.
So that’s what he did. Watson only threw 13 passes that traveled 20 or more air yards, which matched his number of throwaways. In Houston, Watson averaged just over four 20-yard passes for every throw-away . That speed requires time to process, which is why rookie quarterbacks rarely succeed fast and injured ones need time to re-acclimate. Similarly, Watson couldn’t have been comfortable in an offense he’d never run with teammates he’d never played with. So it tracks that he’d need more time than usual to read a defense.
Watson has always ranked among NFL leaders in this category, but he also scrambled more in Houston than he did in 2022 , which means his P2S% peak last season could represent another area where his usual instincts eluded him.
