Three reasons why a wonder drug can cost $5 million rob_cyran

On May 5, Swiss pharmaceutical group Novartis presented positive data from ongoing trials of Zolgensma, its gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy. The drug showed evidence of prolonged survival, motor improvement, and milestone achievements.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is due to decide in May whether to approve the drug. In an April conference call, Novartis Chief Executive Vas Narasimhan indicated the firm was mulling a price between $1.5 million and $5 million per patient for Zolgensma.
