, screening at Sundance, runs about 70 minutes long. But it is made up entirely of just three minutes of archival footage shot in 1938, the images blown up, parsed, examined in forensic detail, replayed, reevaluated.

“For a long time it was in the [Kurtz] family, in a film can, and long forgotten,” Stigter explained during an appearance in Deadline’s virtual Sundance Studio. The raw film was discovered in 2009 by David Kurtz’s grandson, Glenn. The people the elder Kurtz filmed could not know that within about a year, they would face deportation and eventual destruction in the Nazi death camps. Only about 100 of the 3,000 Jewish residents of Nasielsk survived the Holocaust. One of the survivors, Maurice Chandler, had appeared in the footage from 1938.
