Well over 100,000 people in Lower Michigan are still without power after a severe ice storm hit there last week, and now, a new storm is arriving.with 20-mph winds and even higher gusts that could potentially down damaged trees and cause a problem for power restoration in the area hardest hit by the ice storm last week. Luckily, the area should avoid more ice accumulation.
The ice storm first started Wednesday of last week, and at its peak, more than 700,000 customers lost power, meaning some people have been without power for several days in cold temperatures. Because a customer can include multiple people in a single household, the amount of people still affected by these outages is likely well over 100,000 as of Monday morning, according to poweroutage.us.
The two major utility providers, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy, promised to restore power to 95% of customers by the end of Sunday. In a statement, DTE said it had achieved that promise and had "restored power to approximately 600,000 of the 630,000 customers impacted by the recent ice storm" adding that it expected to restore power to the remaining customers by the end of Tuesday. Consumers Energy said it expected to restore power to all customers by the end of the day Monday.
