Thomas Campbell murder trial jury told to not 'engage in guesswork or speculation' as judge gives them legal directions

Jurors in the Thomas Campbell murder trial were told they should not 'engage in guesswork or speculation' as the judge gave them legal directions. Mr Campbell, 38, was found dead in his own home after being 'tortured to death' during a two hour ordeal, prosecutors allege.

Prosecutors claim he was one of three men who 'pounced on' Mr Campbell as he returned home to Mossley in Tameside on Saturday, July 2. A fourth defendant on trial, 50-year-old Karl Murphy, denies participating in the activities of an organised crime group. Prosecutors allege that Ms Campbell provided information about her ex-husband's movements to Mr Belfield. She has admitted doing this but claimed it was only to help Mr Belfield find out whether his ex-girlfriend was in a relationship with Mr Campbell, and that she had no intention for her former spouse to be harmed.

Mr Murphy says Mr Belfield, a friend of his son, had turned up at his home at 10.30pm on July 2 and asked for a lift to the pub. He did not suspect that Mr Belfield was involved in serious crime, he told the jury.
