The ripple is extending further and further out, though I believe it’s far too early at this juncture for panic and for events to be canceled. There have been many mass gatherings since the spread of this virus, and yet the rate of infections is relatively minuscule—312 cases, according to today’s New York Times—that’s .
So much depends on the spread of the virus, but SXSW is a strong 34-year old brand in the live business and many artists and their teams include it as part of their marketing strategies, as do brands, films, and tech companies. Venue owners may the most impacted. One in Austin told us 25% of his yearly gross comes from SXSW. That, unfortunately, may be too much for some businesses to bear.
